The movie picks up where the first installment left off, with Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) now working as a night guard at the Smithsonian Institution. Larry's job becomes more challenging when he discovers that the exhibits come to life at night, and he must navigate a new set of adventures. The story begins with the introduction of a new villain, Kahmunrah (Jonah Hill), the brother of the pharaoh Akhmenrah (Rami Malek) from the first movie. Kahmunrah seeks to gain control over the magic that brings the exhibits to life and uses a powerful artifact to enslave the museum's visitors.
